Myanmar Enacts New Arbitration Law Giving Effect to the New York Convention

On 5 January 2016, the Parliament of Myanmar enacted the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw Law No. 5/2016 (Arbitration Law), thereby replacing Myanmar’s previous Arbitration Law which dates back to 1944.

With the enactment of the new Arbitration Law, Myanmar gives effect to the Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards (New York Convention), to which it acceded on 16 April 2013.
